A project by aMAZElab, Milano

Directed by Claudia Zanfi for TINA B 2011

The Italian organization aMAZElab Art&Cultures brings to the Public Art Festival TINA B 2011 in Prague the international project URBAN MAPS.

The aim of the project URBAN MAPS is to investigate the urban space and to proposal alternative eco-tours of the Balkans, an area marked by geopolitical, socio-territorial changing and phenomenon of rapid transformation in the perception of places. The geographical exploration of the territory will help a better understanding of the places and of the local communities. The project aims to establish a dialogue between interdisciplinary artistic and cultural activities, to stimulate an open debate, while reconstructing the role of art, its responsibility and its relation to society.

URBAN MAPS in Prague will function as a ‘cultural antenna’ and ‘people encounter’; it will animate some of the main squares in the centre of the city and create participatory moments for the local citizens.

URBAN MAPS will present:

n. 30 art works on paper distributed in the public space of the city by renowned international artists such as: Marina Abramovic, Albanian Pavillion, Alterazioni Video, Balkan Depot / Tomislav Terek, Pavel Braila, Yane Calovski, Danica Dakic, Calin Dan, Biljana Djurdjevic, Group Elementi (Biljana Isijanin and Ljupco Isijanin), Thomas Hirschhorn, Hristina Ivanovska, Armin Linke, Rasa Todosijevic – Marinela Kozelj, Borjana Mrdja, Oliver Musovik, Vladimir Nikolic, Damir Niksic, Adrian Paci, Anton Petrov, Tadej Pogacar, Stefano Romano, Massimo Sciacca, Shoba, Igor Sovilj, Biljana Stefanovska, TooA / Cogni – De Mattia, Srdjan Jovanovic Weiss, Zaneta Vangeli. The installation features a great mosaic that brings together ideas, emotions, drawings, photographs and images by the artists, called on to rethink and examine the Balkans as a complex whole and the concept about ‘open city’. ‘Open city’ means to identify the city as an open space, a place of exchange and encounter, of freedom and equity, a crossroads of cultures.

A video program dedicated to issues such as sustainability, urban space, the
contemporary living and the new use of public space. In other words, it analyses the city in terms of the public sphere. The program sets out to investigate the new cultural landscape through collective narratives and establish an ever-changing relationship between the city and its memory, between urban policy and public practices.
The Caravan Hitchhiking Project, is an ecological caravan of art, focused on eco-travel in the cities of the Balkan area. The Caravan will travel from The Netherlands to Prague, crossing territories and communities. It will be placed in one of the main central square of the city, functioning as a mobile art project, connecting people, cultures and worlds.

The Caravan Hitchhiking Project, conceived by Dutch artists Tjerk Ridder (musician and performer) and Peter Bijl (writer and journalist), is a symbolical journey based on the philosophy and slogan: ‘you need others to keep you going’. In every place that they will cross, Tjerk and Peter will come in contact with a large variety of people, from different cultures, ages and backgrounds, with a different history and religion. The project is developing a visual interpretation of personal stories narrated by local people and transformed into music and performance by the duo.
